What Is Genicular Artery Embolization?

Genicular embolization is a minimally invasive procedure designed to help reduce inflammation and discomfort associated with chronic knee conditions. This innovative treatment targets tiny arteries that contribute to inflammation around the knee joint. By carefully blocking these vessels, Dr. Bhatti can reduce irritation and help improve mobility. Many patients dealing with long-term joint discomfort explore this option as part of a chronic knee pain treatment plan when other therapies have not provided enough relief. Because the procedure is performed through a small catheter, recovery time is typically shorter compared to traditional surgery.

In a 2026 position statement, the Society of Interventional Radiology described GAE as a reasonable option for carefully selected patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis who have not gotten adequate relief from conservative care and who are not ready for, or are not candidates for, knee-replacement surgery.

In the United States, the embolic materials used in GAE are FDA-cleared for other purposes and are used off-label for knee osteoarthritis, and research into long-term results is ongoing. GAE is intended to reduce osteoarthritis-related knee pain — it is not a cure for arthritis and does not reverse joint damage. Dr. Zagum Bhatti reviews your imaging and history to decide whether GAE is an appropriate option for you.

Who It's For

Who Can Benefit from Genicular Artery Embolization?

People living with persistent knee discomfort may benefit from this advanced procedure. It is often considered by patients seeking relief from arthritis symptoms or exploring options for arthritis knee pain treatment without undergoing major surgery.

Persistent Knee Pain

People Experiencing Persistent Knee Pain

Patients who struggle with long-lasting knee discomfort during walking, climbing stairs, or daily activities may consider this option. The procedure can help reduce inflammation and serve as a targeted treatment for pain in knee joint conditions.

Knee Swelling or Inflammation

Patients with Knee Swelling or Inflammation

Ongoing inflammation around the knee can lead to stiffness and discomfort that interferes with daily life. Genicular embolization may help reduce inflammation and function as a minimally invasive knee swelling pain treatment.

Non-Surgical Solutions

Individuals Seeking Non-Surgical Solutions

Many patients want to avoid invasive procedures or lengthy recovery periods. For those individuals, genicular embolization can be considered a knee pain non-surgical treatment option that focuses on reducing inflammation through targeted vascular therapy.

Advanced Knee Therapies

Patients Exploring Advanced Knee Therapies

Individuals who have tried physical therapy, medication, or injections without lasting relief may explore newer interventional radiology treatments. Genicular embolization offers a modern approach aimed at addressing inflammation and improving mobility.

Common Symptoms

Genicular Artery Embolization for Patients with Chronic Knee Pain

Living with long-term knee discomfort can make even simple movements difficult. Activities like walking, exercising, or climbing stairs may become painful over time. For many individuals, the genicular embolization procedure becomes part of a comprehensive treatment for swollen knee pain, especially when symptoms are linked to inflammation or arthritis affecting the joint.

checkPersistent knee discomfort during movement
checkSwelling around the knee joint
checkStiffness that limits mobility
checkPain when climbing stairs
checkDiscomfort after prolonged standing
checkReduced flexibility in the knee

By addressing the small arteries that contribute to inflammation, this therapy can help reduce symptoms and support improved joint function. Many patients seek it as a minimally invasive treatment for swelling and pain in knee, particularly when other conservative treatments have not delivered lasting relief.

Because the procedure is performed through a tiny catheter and guided imaging, it typically involves minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. Patients often benefit from faster recovery times and improved comfort compared to more invasive surgical treatments for knee pain.

What to Expect

Safety, Recovery & What to Expect

GAE is an emerging, minimally invasive procedure. Understanding the recovery, the possible side effects, and who is not a candidate is part of choosing the right treatment.

Recovery

GAE is performed as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Bhatti uses local anesthesia with light sedation and reaches the small arteries around the knee through a tiny access point in the upper thigh or wrist — no surgical incision or stitches. Most patients go home the same day and return to light daily activity within a few days, following Dr. Bhatti's specific instructions.

Side effects and risks

The most common side effect is temporary skin discoloration over the treated area — reported in roughly 1 in 9 patients in pooled studies — which is usually mild and fades over a few weeks. Less commonly, a temporary increase in knee pain or minor bruising at the access site, and rarely a small skin sore or temporary tingling near the knee or foot. Published studies have not reported severe or life-threatening complications, though long-term data are still being gathered.

Who may not be a candidate

GAE is not right for everyone. It may not be appropriate for people with an active infection, certain circulatory conditions, or factors that make contrast imaging unsafe (such as some kidney conditions or contrast allergies). It is also not a substitute for knee replacement when surgery is clearly indicated. Dr. Bhatti reviews your imaging, medical history, and prior treatments to determine whether GAE is a safe and reasonable option in your case.

Surgery-Free Care

Why Patients Choose GAE Over Surgery for Knee Pain

GAE is an option for carefully selected patients with knee osteoarthritis who have not gotten enough relief from conservative care and who are not ready for, or are not candidates for, knee replacement. It is not a replacement for surgery when surgery is the right choice — Dr. Bhatti will help you weigh the options.
