Weak Urine Stream and Difficulty Urinating: Signs of an Enlarged Prostate

The Urine stream isn’t what it used to be. There’s hesitation before it starts, straining to keep it going, and dribbling at the end. You might find yourself standing at the urinal longer than other men. These changes have been happening gradually enough that you’ve told yourself they’re just part of getting older. But they are symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia that can and should be evaluated.

A weak or slow urine stream, along with difficulty starting urination, intermittent flow, and post-void dribbling, are classic lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) of BPH. As the prostate grows around the urethra, it compresses the urinary channel and restricts flow.

At Seamless Medical Centers, Dr. Zagum Bhatti, Board-Certified Interventional Radiologist, provides PAE for Houston-area men from Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, League City, and Humble. Houston-area patients are seen at our Port Arthur office. Houston PAE service. BPH condition overview. Port Arthur PAE service.

Why an Enlarged Prostate Weakens Stream

The urethra passes directly through the prostate. When BPH enlarges the prostate, it compresses the urethra from all sides. The narrowed channel restricts flow, requiring the bladder muscle to generate more pressure, producing the combination of symptoms: weaker, slower, hesitant, and interrupted stream.

Treatment Options

Medical management with alpha-blockers relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck, improving flow. When medications are not providing adequate improvement, PAE offers a more definitive approach. PAE reduces prostate volume by blocking arterial blood supply to the enlarged gland, allowing it to shrink. Learn how PAE works and how it compares to TURP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could my weak stream be caused by something other than BPH?

Yes. Urethral stricture, bladder neck contracture, or in rare cases prostate cancer can also cause weak stream. Evaluation by a specialist including digital rectal exam, PSA testing, and uroflowmetry helps distinguish BPH from other causes.

When should I seek treatment for weak stream?

When urinary symptoms are affecting your quality of life — causing you to modify activities, lose sleep, or experience frustration in daily routine — treatment discussion is appropriate. The right time is when you decide your symptoms are unacceptable.

How significant is stream improvement after PAE?

Many men report meaningful improvement in flow rate and urinary symptoms after PAE. Most experience noticeable improvement in peak flow within the first few months as the prostate shrinks.

Is PAE covered by insurance?

PAE is covered by many insurance plans when medically indicated for symptomatic BPH. The Seamless Medical Centers team assists with verification and prior authorization.
